Name: Medical Volunteer Program
Area: Medicine Objectives: Health is important in human development but unfortunately it is difficult to find in Peru, especially for the poor. For this reason, Expand Peru has created a volunteer medical program in which volunteers offer assistance to poor children and adults in different specialized areas. This program is managed by professionals and students in the diverse medical sciences. Location of Work: This program takes place in the hospitals, rural medical centers, and the different centers of assistance in our organization: CASA project, rural schools, schools of special education, Casa de Bebes, Niños de la Calle, children with AIDS, the orphanage, and Construyendo Vidas. Who We Help: Children, mothers, and the families of those we help in the different health centers Program Description: Pediatrics: Child healthcare is very important. However, in Peru this group is the most neglected. We need professionals that work in prevention, attention, and control of children from zero to twelve years. Gynecology: The rural medical centers, city hospitals, and especially mothers benefit from our programs by implementing control and attention to diseases, sex education, disease prevention, birth control etc. Nursing: We need nurses to implement talks about disease prevention, to give shots, to offer treatments, to visit residents, give well-baby and family exams, etc. Odontology (Denistry): We see a large population of children from different programs of assistance as well as their parents. Treatments, extractions, mouth hygiene, education, prevention, etc are all part of the program. Nutrition: These professionals are very important for our organization because we work with small kids in extreme poverty and children with AIDS. Many of them suffer from malnutrition and other problems that come from an unhealthy or inadequate diet. Therefore, nutritionists offer the necessary help to develop plans and strategies for a better diet as well as their supervision and monitoring. Psychology: In our different centers of assistance help from psychologists is very important in order to develop educational strategies and help social transition of the children as well as how to solve behavioral problems and child abuse, among other problems. We also need medical professionals and students in other specialties such as: General medicine, dermatology, obstetrics, ophthalmologists, etc
