When we left the United States we did not have any idea what to expect for we had only know about the whole thing by way of internet. The first week was exciting as everything in our whole world became brand new. The family we stayed witty was warm and inviting our whole stay. Ingrid and Bernabe have been extremely helpful in our work as well as our social life. The volunteering experience has been rewarding. Teaching English is easier than I anticipated as the boys in the orphanage are very eager to learn. I invite anyone who has some free time to come and enjoy Huancayo. |

Although we knew nothing of what to expect, our arrival granted us culture and inexperience, unimaginable. I highly recommend the rural homestay if you enjoy a tranquil lifestyle. The surrounding valley has endless adventures waterfalls , archeological sites, and native crafts galore. Get out and see them! They are close and highly accessable (bring your toilet paper, rain coat, son screen everywhere you go!) The kids are awesome and excited to learn. Teaching English and art was challenging hut always a great time if you know any songs or games, bring them with you! The kids will love them!. TRAVEL SOON!!

Gracias a ExpandPeru.

My experience in Peru was a challenging, but very fulfilling one. There was a lot to adjust to when I first arrived, such as the language barrier and culture shock. But, Expand Peru and its volunteers were a great support system that was available to me as much or as little as I needed. I made great friends and memories, and learned a lot about myself along the way. There is nothing like immersing yourself in the Peruvian world and giving your time to the community. Viva el Peru! :)

We had a fantastic time volunteering through Expand Peru. We were in Huancayo and teaching English and Art in Concepcion in August/September 2006. We were teaching a large class of children and it was very challenging at times but one of the most rewarding things that we have ever done. Bernabe` and Ingrid were very encouraging of us and were great hosts. We stayed with a family and the hospitality shown to us was exceptional, the food excellent and we now consider our hosts to be close friends. We would both recommend volunteering through Expand Peru.

My three months in Peru were the happiest and most fullfilling months of my life. Expand Peru is a great program because it offers work placements in a variety of areas, leaving an option for volunteers, depending on his or her preference. Working in a school outside of Huancayo was an amazing experience for me, being able to assist with children living in the rural areas. Each morning I walked by the donkeys and cows, carrying children to school, or beginning to plow fields. Although children at the age of two can become fairly annoying, when they eagerly admire earrings or any form of different clothing and ask you for the fiftieth time 'como te llamas?' and giggle histerically when you play little games with them, the feeling of satisfaction is amazing.
Living in Huancayo, Peru is also an incredible experience. The culture of Huancayo is everywhere, exhibited by the huge percentage of women dressed in their traditional clothing, shopping through the fruit and vegetable markets, the flocks of sheep and a cow or two sometimes seen in the roads, and the many festivals of Huancayo with traditional music and dance.
I wish that I had had more time to spend volunteering and would have liked to try helping with some English. I absolutely loved my family... Abuelita is the sweetest woman and it was great to meet her family and spend some holidays with all of the family |
